Breaking the silence . . .

I have been a part of a church since before I was born. (Literally, I was an in-utero church member, no kidding!) I love Jesus, I love the Bible, and up until recently I could have honestly said that I love church.

My husband and I met at Bible college. We were missionaries overseas for more than four years. We moved back across the ocean (at no small expense to ourselves and our supporters) because we felt God had called us to minister as part of a local church in the capacity of the youth pastor and his wife. It was the culmination of many of our dreams.

We moved to Florida, bought a house, and proceeded to live the crap out of our big, happy, church-going life.

I used to say to people, "You know how when people are called to Ethiopia, they tell you that they just love Ethiopian people, and they have no explanation for that other than that God put that love in their hearts? I feel exactly that same way about our church family!" And it wasn't just something I said. I meant it, with every fiber of my being.

But I haven't regularly attended a church for the better part of six months. Just putting that down here makes me very sad.

On January 15, 2014, my husband, Austin and I basically got punched in the stomach and then kicked in the teeth by the very leadership that told us exactly six months earlier that they had our best interests at heart and would look out for us and love us like family. It's a very long story, but this evening Austin shared the highlights via Facebook post:

I think I've stayed quiet long enough. It's time for the congregation of First Baptist Church of Altamonte Springs to know the truth. I didn't choose to leave. I was called into an office with three men and was told that I would be resigning. I told them I wouldn't resign without praying about it and talking with my wife first. They told me they weren't asking, they were telling. You'll see that in the pre-typed letter of resignation they had waiting for me (see - "I will honor the decision of the leadership, Pastor Ron, and Personnel and will consider the health of the church over my personal feelings"). I was terminated due to "Philosophical Differences" and told that if I wanted to receive any severance pay I would keep my mouth shut and "not cause division." I was also informed that it was expected that we would not return to the church. So what does "Philosophical Differences" mean? Good question. It means that Ron Smith told me that it didn't matter if I worked for multiple weeks on end without a day off, I was not allowed to take any comp time to spend with Katy or even to make up for a sabbath. His attitude was "Jesus never took a day off." He also told me that, "Katy just sits at home clipping coupons all day so why not call her up and take her to a high school football game with you, and that could be your time together." I told him that was unreasonable and that those expectations are what lead to the high level of burn-out in ministry and a lot of the moral failures in pastors' lives, and I felt it was unbiblical. He disagreed. He even changed the 2014 policy manual to state that employees would not receive any comp time for work performed on "days off." What were my days off? Friday and Saturday....and I'm a youth pastor. When do retreats happen? When do sports games (badminton for example) happen? When do overnighters, movie nights, video game nights, go out for ice cream nights, talk about jesus times happen?...Oh yeah, Friday nights and Saturday, all school year long. So I had to choose between date night or ministry, Sabbath rest or discipleship. He then created a document that I was told I would have to sign stating that I agreed with his policies and would abide by them. I told him I couldn't do so in good conscience. So he and his clan fired me. The kicker, FBCAS is a church governed by the congregation. He can't legally change the policy manual without a church vote. He can't create documents and require me to sign them. What I found out after the fact is that the three men in the room had no right to demand my resignation. The truth is, if they wanted me gone, a deacon would have to present it to the church and you would all have to vote to fire me. I didn't know that. The deacons didn't even know I was fired until days after I was gone, despite the fact he met with them hours before the meeting I was fired in (I know because several of the deacons called me, very surprised, asking me what had happened). I sat in that office in tears and begged them to not tell the church I resigned because I had made a commitment to you students that I wouldn't "abandon you," as many of you put it. They promised they wouldn't say I "resigned". That Sunday, Cory Caslow stood up in front of the church and stated that they had "accepted my resignation." He also said that the personnel committee had met with me on multiple occasions and tried to council with me. To this day I've never even met with the personnel committee. The day I was fired, Katy wrote an email to the worship leader informing her that she would be leaving the worship team as I had been asked to resign. About 30 minutes later, Ron called my phone and told me that he would be reporting the email to the personnel committee and they would possibly take away my severance because "that action is divisive," and I essentially needed to keep my wife under control (I have a copy of the email if you want to see how "divisive" Katy is). So why am I telling you the truth now? Because I thought the leadership at FBCAS would ask the hard questions and would stand up for truth and accountability in leadership. Because I was pursued by a mega church to be their youth pastor and it reminded me that I didn't suck at being a pastor, but we were both too hurt to even consider it. Because I've had a new job for months, I make just as much money, I'm probably moving away from Florida, and you all deserve the truth. Better yet, my wife and I deserve to leave Florida with the people we loved so dearly knowing the truth. Many of you have believed the lies, not spoken to us, and not cared enough to ask what really happened. That hurts, Katy especially. She has spent weeks in the past crying and asking me how people who knew us could believe that we would just leave like that. Many of you know we were wronged but were too afraid to stand up for us. You could share this post so people know the truth...but you probably won't. Some of you will unfriend me, that's cool sheep, graze on.

It has been a very rough several months since all of this happened, but we have had time to process through it together and with our families. We still love the Lord and desire to serve Him in some capacity, but still feel very raw whenever we are in a church setting.

We don't share this story to cause strife or division, but because we truly believe that knowing the truth is the necessary first step to healthy change.

And also as a word of caution: Don't take everything your "pastor" says at face value. He is just a man. A good, godly pastor will welcome accountability and honest questions. If you ever come across a pastor who doesn't, run. Fast. Also, church structure is there for a reason. Any pastor who says he doesn't need an elder board should be a gigantic red flag. Even the apostles (the men who actually, physically walked with Jesus), didn't take the opportunity to demand their leadership rights without a group of leaders being involved (read just about any chapter in the book of Acts).

So that's our story. God is good, and He continues to provide for us (we have been paying two mortgages since November of last year, so that has added extreme financial stress to the situation). We know that none of this is a surprise to Him, and we also know that our problems are very small, not only in light of eternity, but when compared to those around us who are struggling with really important things!

Hope you have a great weekend! I'm hoping mine includes a beach!

Christmas Traditions

I grew up in a family with a lot of traditions.

Thanksgiving is really the beginning of the Christmas season for us. Starting with the annual watching of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in the morning. Thanksgiving itself was always a day full of food, family, and football - much like every other American family. Ever.

The day after Thanksgiving, we decorate for Christmas, eat Christmas Cap'n Crunch, drink Dad's special homemade hot chocolate, watch "Christmas Eve on Sesame Street," and crank the Christmas music :)

The Christmas music is pretty much a permanent fixture at that point until after January 1st.

The number of presents we "traditionally" open on Christmas Eve is hotly contested (some years it was just one, some years we opened all of the presents with only stockings saved for Christmas morning), but we almost always went to a Christmas Eve service. Sometimes more than one. Growing up in Colorado Springs, we had quite the smorgasbord of options. Some years they were quite elaborate, such as the full scale production put on by New Life Church. Other years the church where my dad pastored held a sweet, simple candle-light service.

Advent wreaths and readings, shopping, wrapping presents, the ever-growing list of Christmas "classic" movies that we would watch. All of it made for very fun and memorable seasons of my childhood.

One of my favorite Christmas memories is the year I got to play Mary in a variety-style program. My Dad sang "A Strange Way to Save the World" , and my aunt helped me memorize and dramatize a beautiful reading. There's something about internalizing the emotions of those so closely tied to the original Christmas story that makes those Scriptures and stories come alive.

And I think that's really the point. These traditions we create and pass on to our children are completely pointless and worthless if they do not build into our celebrations, and eventually bleed out in our lifestyles, deep appreciation for the true wonder of the season.

The absolute magnificence and glory of the mystery that is the incarnation. Christ coming to earth. God condescending to become human.

Yet it was our weaknesses he carried; it was our sorrows that weighed him down.
(Isaiah 53:4a NLT)

I hope that in the midst of all the craziness of Christmas, you know the true beauty of Christ, that you have personally experienced his unfathomable love for YOU! Because when it comes right down to it, that's all that really matters.

Sunday Song & Scripture

Two of my favorite parts of every Sunday church or chapel service are the praise and worship songs and the pastor (or chaplain as the case may be) sharing from the Word. So, on this Sunday, I thought I'd share a song and a Scripture that have been on my heart!

SONG:

The past few days I have woke up first thing in the morning with this song stuck in my head, it's that good! :) I just love it!

How Can I Keep From Singing
by Chris Tomlin

SCRIPTURE:

Tuesday past was the last day of this semester of PWOC (Protestant Women of the Chapel). I have been a part of the group doing the Breaking Free study by Beth Moore. One of the central passages of the study has been very precious to me during the study, and I have therefore set out to commit it to memory.

Isaiah 61:1-3 (NIV)
The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me,
because the LORD has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners,[a]
to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor
and the day of vengeance of our God,
to comfort all who mourn,
and provide for those who grieve in Zion—
to bestow on them a crown of beauty
instead of ashes,
the oil of joy
instead of mourning,
and a garment of praise
instead of a spirit of despair.
They will be called oaks of righteousness,
a planting of the LORD
for the display of his splendor.

I hope you are all having a wonderful, restful Sunday and that you have a fantastic week!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
HELLO!!!!!!!!
Long time no blog!
We are back in the States for about a month checking in with our families and friends, speaking at churches, and doing some more fundraising!
What that means for the great adventure is that the Internet will be far more reliable, and I may get to post more often - hopefully, that's the plan anyway, lol!
Anyway, here we go:
My husband ROCKS because people just can't help but love him!
I know what you're thinking ('can you say partial?'), and I know I probably am a little biased, but once you hear my stories, you'll understand :)
The other day we were visiting some friends, and we ended up getting to their town on the night of their small group. We told them not to cancel, and they invited us to go with them, so we found ourselves eating dinner with a roomful of strangers, except for our friends with whom we were staying (not an uncommon occurrence these days, but always a little rattling for me). Part of the way through the meal it struck me that not only was Austin having a great time, he was also the life of the party! He kept us all laughing from start to finish, and everyone was having a ball! He has such a great sense of humor, and he just puts people at ease!
This got me to thinking, and as I reflected upon it I realized that he does this all the time - no matter where in the wide world we are!
When we were in the Czech Republic we were working with Military Community Youth Ministry, and on our second week there, Austin was put in charge of a group of American students doing a work project in one of the schools. He was also in charge of running a workshop that would encourage the American students and the Czech students to hang out and get to know each other. The first day that the groups got together to plan their strategy for the week, Austin's work group took to him so quickly, and by the end of the meeting everyone was referring to him as "awesome Austin!" The first day that the groups were in the schools, they were offering several workshops (journal making, football, basketball, cheerleading, etc.) Austin's group (board games/hang out) drew about a dozen Czech students. By the end of the week they were up to almost sixty!!! :)
Lest you think his magnetic personality is only in effect on the other side of the ocean, I have one more piece of bragging anecdotal evidence! :) As I said at the beginning, part of the reason that we're back in the States for a bit is to speak at churches and raise support. (And when I say "we" are speaking, I mean Austin is speaking and I'm in the back being nervous for him, lol!) So, this past Sunday we had engagements at two churches, one right after the other, so after the first one Austin had to hurry over to the second one, so I stayed and greeted people as the service got out. It seemed that everyone I talked to had something to say about how interesting and entertaining it was to listen to Austin speak, and many went on and on about how they couldn't believe how polished and professional he was - and he doesn't use ANY notes!!!
He's pretty amazing!
Wow! It's obvious that I haven't been doing this often enough because I had A LOT to say! And there's so much more I'd like to add, but if you're still reading this I don't want to push my luck :)
Motivate Me Monday ~ Appreciating the Word
Over the last couple of weeks, I have been reading Francine Rivers's Mark of the Lion series as part of my 101 things in 1001 days list. It is a compelling series that I would highly recommend. The series follows early Christians in Rome, Ephesus, and ultimately Germania. I have posted my detailed thoughts about each book (A Voice in the Wind, An Echo in the Darkness, and As Sure as the Dawn); however, one of the common themes of the three books that struck me was the characters' appreciation for Scripture.
I was very convicted about the degree to which I take my Bible for granted. Most of the early churches shared copies of only one or two epistles, and sometimes copies of the Torah. The same is true for the persecuted church of today. How many whole Bibles do you own? Between the two of s we probably have at least six or seven, and to my shame I have sometimes gone for months at a time without cracking the covers! Why is it that it takes the threat of losing something before we realize how precious it is? It is not a dusty history book or a dry fairy tale - it is truly God's love letter to us!
Be sure to check in at Sarah Mae's place for some other motivated ladies!
Amazing Christmasy Weekend :)
We had a fabulously fun winter/Christmas time this past weekend, so I thought I would give you the pictorial tour:
My very first official MHR shirt came in the mail! :)
And of course, no Christmas parade would be complete without Santa! In ours he was hitching a ride on the local fire engine (the sleigh must be getting a tune up for the big day, lol)!
All of that happened on Friday night! Saturday we went shopping in Des Moines, not Christmas shopping, as we are nearly done with that (thanks to the wonders of modern Internet technology), but we did pick up some necessities that we needed for some house projects, and got some great deals at Harbor Freight (that store is better than Christmas morning for Austin, I think, he's like a little kid in a candy store, lol)! Before we came home we enjoyed lu-pper (that's a combination of lunch and supper) at CiCi's Pizza! Yummm! We had picked up Season 3 of the Prison Break DVD's at the library before we left town that morning, so we started watching those when we got home!
Sunday morning we went to church with Tyler and Emma, and Chris (both Tyler and Chris work with Austin), then we went home and finished watching Prison Break Season 3 on DVD (we are almost caught up, Ashley!)
This week we will hopefully finish decorating the house - this is the latest date ever in the history of my life that I have yet to get the tree up! We also need to get Christmas card pictures taken so we can get those printed and mailed out PRONTO!!! We are also hosting our first family holiday party at our house the weekend before Christmas, so I need to get our menu and shopping lists squared away - I am also planning on starting all of the baking this week! I know I sound harried, but I just love all of these tasks, so they are not really chores!
Pastor Jeff's sermon this week was a great reminder to slow down in the midst of all of the hustle and bustle and enjoy the season, but not only that, to be thankful for the true reason we celebrate! What are you doing to remember Jesus' birth this season? I am looking for a good Advent calendar/reading/schedule, so would welcome any suggestions! :)
Hope you are all enjoying this Christmas season as much as I am! :)
Marriage Builder Monday
If you have been reading my blog for any length of time, then you know that I have a pretty high opinion of marriage. You probably also know that I feel as though marriage is tremendously undervalued in today's society, a fact that makes me alternately irate and deeply saddened. With that in mind, I enjoy participating and encouraging others to participate in blog events that prompt us to positively impact our marriages.
I have only been married for one year, but I have learned, even in such a short time, that a truly great marriage is the result of a lot of hard work. I would by no means say that Austin and I have achieved this in every way; however, we are both committed to each other and our marriage, and we both work to be better people and better spouses, with the help of God.
Our pastor's series the last couple of weeks has been on marriage and relationships (tying into the release of Fireproof), and he has made several wonderful points along the way. Here are a couple of my favorites:
~ Love has to be a daily decision because everyone is constantly changing and growing, so we have to decide, with God's help, to love our mates every day even in the midst of the changes.
~ Human love cannot always whether the storms of life or stand the test of time, so we have to depend upon the Lord to help us love the way he loves.
My Marriage Builders for the week of October 5-11:
1) Continue reading The Power of a Praying Wife.
2) Help him pack for his business trip.
3) Include daily trip notes in his bag.
4) Have a pecan pie waiting for him when he gets home :)
Hope everybody has a fabulous Monday! :)
