~ My Husband Rocks! ~ Hard Work & Consideration

Click here to read about why I started MHR Fridays!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Just when I think my husband could't be more amazing, he goes and knocks my socks off! We are preparing to go into the ministry, and therefore need to get our house on the market ASAP. Most of our projects on the house are done, but there was one room that we have been putting off because we knew it would be a pain in the butt to get done...the dreaded guest bathroom.
We had installed new fixtures into it, but never removed the old plaster and lath or insulated the walls, so we knew that had to be completed, but we also knew it would be a nightmare because the fixtures would have to come back out (except for the bathtub). I was dreading this project sooooooo much, but I knew it needed to get done, and soon, so I was trying to steel myself for the inevitable.
Imagine my surprise, then, when Austin called me at work on Monday to let me know that he and his buddy from work would be taking care of the bathroom this week, so to expect them to be making a mess of our upstairs! He knew that I was terrified of doing that job, so instead of asking me to help him with it, he hired a friend to help him finish it! And on the nights that his friend couldn't be here, he worked by himself!
And this was not an easy job, folks! Heavy lifting, terrible dust, and a very small space in which to work - I just cannot get over how great he is! :) He finished the demo part of the job, and drywall should be in within the next few days! Praise the Lord!
Tell us all about your amazing hubby (or wifey :D)!!!
~ My Husband Rocks! ~ reminders . . .
Click here to read about why I started MHR Fridays!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This week has definitely reinforced for me many of the qualities that I absolutely adore about my husband!

~ We finished our deck, which turned out beautifully: I love that he is such a talented carpenter, and that he takes such pride in his work.
~ He has had a particularly rough week at work, but he has maintained such a great attitude: I am so grateful that he works so hard, even when he does not get the respect he deserves there.
~ I have been somewhat discouraged about some of the hold-ups we've run up against this week regarding BBI, but he is more confident than ever that this is God's will for our lives: I love that he has such strong faith and that he is strong in his convictions and encouraging when I find myself doubting.
~ We began gutting our basement last night, and he was soooo excited! : I adore that he is excited about finishing the very last unfinished portion of our huge re-construction project! One of the reasons he is so excited is that finishing it gets us that much closer to launching BBI, and that brings me so much joy!

Lots of fun reasons why my husband rocked my socks off this week! How about yours?

~ My Husband Rocks! ~ Responsible!

Click here to read about why I started MHR Fridays!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My fabulous hubby, Austin, is a very responsible individual.
I've posted before about how great he is with money, how concerned he is for me and my welfare, what a great spiritual leader he is, how he takes care of me when I'm sick, and how seriously he takes his role as my protector, so I won't go on and on about all of that, lol!
However, just this past week, he has shown me - in a lot of varying areas - how much he earnestly desires to make good decisions and take care of me, and our family.
The first one came last Friday when we were riding the bike trail around our town.
Photobucket
No, that's not us,
I just thought it was a cool pic
Somehow we got separated, and somehow - miracle of miracles - I ended up getting ahead of him and beat him home. (That never happens!) To this day neither of us can figure out how that happened, but that's not even really the point. When he rode up the driveway, he looked rather cross (to say the least). After he pulled in, we proceeded to have a quite lenghty argument discussion about sticking together on the bike trail. Honestly, at the time, I didn't feel like he was rocking very much, but looking back on the situation I am able to see through the fabulous 20/20 hindsight goggles that he was just very worried about me - he ended up adding 2 miles to his ride just waiting and looking for me!
Another area where he takes his responsibilities very seriously is our house.
Photobucket
Thank the Lord,
we are f-a-a-a-a-a-r past THIS stage,
but, you get the idea
We are getting V-E-R-Y close to being finished, and all of the final touches, not to mention the time limits and pressure from the bank on the financial side of the coin, are causing Austin a HUGE amount of stress. I so appreciate that he cares enough - and is a responsible enough individual - to worry about these things. Although I pray that his worrying will not be detrimental and that he will ultimately trust in God to take care of those things which are out of our control; it speaks very highly of his character that he concerns himself with the whole project :) And he is truly very talented at every piece he has tackled thus far. He is also wise enough to know when something is beyond his ability and how to ask for help!
And last, but certainly not least:
He's taking me here:
Photobucket
Well, maybe not exactly here,
but isn't this a gorgeous view?
That's right, we're going to Colorado to be with my family and spend the week (the whole group of us) in the same condo where Austin and I spent our honeymoon! I am soooooo looking forward to this trip, spending time with my family and friends from home, and relaxing in the beautiful mountain scenery and sunshine!
~ My Husband Rocks! ~ but sometimes . . .
Click here to read about why I started MHR Fridays!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

. . . I don't think he believes it.

Poor Austin. He's been under a little stress lately. And by a little, I mean stress such as would cripple an ordinary man.

Praise the Lord that mine is no ordinary man :)

He is so very sweet because I think he tries to keep me from worrying about it, but I know that he has been very discouraged lately. There are a lot of details that I'm not going to go into here, but between work and trying to get everything finished on and around the house before the end of this month, he has a lot on his plate. He is my superman! Please pray that I would be a true help meet to him in these circumstances and that we would both look to the Lord for our true strength as we try to do the seemingly-impossible!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Don't forget . . . next week is going to be one big party! Hope you'll all be able to join us as we celebrate the 1st birthday of My Husband Rocks!!!
~ My Husband Rocks! ~ Expertise
Click here to read about why I started MHR Fridays!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Good morning, and happy Friday everyone! Where did this week fly away to? My goodness! Preparing to trasition to my new job has kept me hopping - in the best way - this week! I have a post started about my experience at the Women of Faith event in Des Moines this past weekend, and tomorrow Austin and I become contestants in the "Amazing Race" (at least the church's 20's & 30's version), which I am sure will provide great photos and a fun story, so stay tuned!!!

Now, on to my rocking hubby! :)

Yesterday, I got an e-mail from our good friend Anna asking if Austin and I would have time to walk through a house that she's looking at purchasing. Her fathr is concernec that the house is going to be more work than it's worth, and wanted Austin to take a look a it since he has had the experience of working on his own house and he would be honest with Anna about the extent of the work that this house needs.

Don't you just love it when people appreciate the ones that you love? I mean, I know he's great - but it's just so much fun when other people recognize that as well :)

He also rocks because he puts his all into everything he does. He didn't just run through the house, give it the cursory once-over and spout off an opinion. He very thoughfully and meticulously looked through each room and shared his thoughts and opinions in a very caring manner. Austin is the kind of person who takes a request for advice very seiously - and he would never say anything if he didn't mean it and believe it with everything that he has.

In addition to having wonderful knowledge and giving thoughtful and experienced advice, he is also so very humble about the whole affair!

He's just so wonderful! Isn't he?

Multitsking post - there's a lot going on people :)

DISCLAIMER: The following post is a long, rambling, and admittedly rather random piece of blogliture. I decided to post it anyway for the following reason: I always have dozens of ideas of topics that I would love to post about. So much so that I have pages and pages of notebook paper, and lined sticky notes from work of "post ideas" that have not ever made it to the screen. And all of the below topics are things that, if I allow myself to procrastinate, may become casualties of my busy-ness. That is not to say that there is anything particularly profound in any of them, they are just things that I am excited about, or need to get off of my chest. So, in addition to a short MHR Inspiration post, I give you - my stream of conciousness. I would like to apologize in advance if it is tremendously difficult to follow. I will make every effort to prevent it from being so

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
5:16 Club
I have really fallen off the wagon - big and bad. I love the concept, I love the ladies who are involved, but I also deeply love the sleeping. Oh, how I love the sleeping!
That said, I have decided to put my best foot forward on this one, and give it another try. It has often been said, or read, that any action repeated over a span of 21 days becomes a habit, so, for the next twenty-one days, I am going to endeavor to rise and shine at 5:16 on the nose.
Any prayers and/or accountability in this area would be greatly appreciated.
Spring Porch/Landscaping Project
Last night after we finished our delicious supper of leftovers :P, Austin and I were in our usual spots (on the couch) enjoying our usual post-supper activity (watching television), when he suddenly got the urge to go tear up our front porch. The weather was absolutely gorgeous, and it was a project we have been putting off for some time, so I joined him and we spent a fun-filled hour or so tearing up dusty outdoor carpet and rotting plywood that covered up older, more-rotted porch boards!
Photobucket
With a gorgeous weekend on the forecast, we are hoping that this weekend will consist of much more porch deconstruction, followed by the even-more-exciting re-construction, as well as (possibly - if we have time) some long-awaited landscaping!
(I am LOVING the hyphen this morning - really, i very-much am, lol)
American Idol can dance, what!
Hi, my name is Katy, and I'm an addict.
I am totally in love with this season of American Idol and was happy as a clam with last night's results. When it was over, I said to Austin "I think this is the first season that I have ever totally agreed with the order of all of the vote-offs." So, kudos to you America, way to vote!
And that dance number at the beginning! Wowza! (Was I the only one who got the impression that they were lip-synching? No problem if they were because we all know that they can SANG, but it would take a LOT of breath control to dance like that and sing as well as they did, and I'm pretty sure they pre-recorded, but hey, I've been wrong before)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Gotta Love This Weather

We have moved into that beautiful part of spring where the sun is out and the grass is growing and the tree are budding and the flowers are blooming! (For this weekend at least, I think it is supposed to rain all week next week, but I'll take what I can get at this point!)

You can tell we've been eskimos for too long, because the office starts clearing out at about 2:30 in the afternoon (except for those of us who are paid hourly, of course) and everyone and his brother has their motorcycle out and shined and is out soaking up the sun as quickly as humanly possible.

Our buddy Michael just purchased his first Harley, so we all engaged in a little post-work ride around the lake in the beautiful sunshine last night. I think I made it home in record time (shortened my 4 minute commute to about 2 and 1/2 - it's great when the lights/stop signs/traffic all align, lol!)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Summer Supper Suggestions
I am starting to work on my meal plan for the month of May. Yes, I am a crazy person and I (loosely) plan our suppers for every evening of the month.
With that said, I am on the lookout for some quick and simple summery supper suggestions (I just love that alliteration :D). Any ideas would be appreciated - we're going for suppers that do not require the use of an oven, contain yumminess, and do not involve the purchasing of exotic (read "expensive") ingredients. Ready . . . GO! :) - Feel free to comment with your brilliantness, or e-mail me at katylinvw(at)yahoo dot com. If I get a lot of great recipes I will dedicate a post to sharing them with everybody! (Like how I threw in a bribe there?)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

MHR Inspiration #14 = Shout Out!!!!

I have made a new bloggy friend!!! Her name is Cher, and she has this brilliant blog Love, Actually Creative Ideas for Romance on a Budget.

It is absolutely adorable, and you must go and check it out as soon as you are able! Here's a blurb from her profile: "I grew up in Montana. Went to college in Utah. Recently moved to Boston, where my husband attends dental school. What began as an occasional hobby to impress my hubs has turned into an endless ambition to create romance on a budget...because every couple needs a little romance-therapy now and then!"

She has a TON of great ideas, and her site really fits in with the whole motivation behind ~ My Husband Rocks! ~ Fridays! :)

As a prompt for this week:

Include in your MHRF post one of your creative ideas for romance on a budget! We can all use a little romance from time to time, and right now is a great time to be sharing those budget ideas!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hope this wasn't too ridiculously random! Have a terrific Thursday!
Please Pray!
Okay. It is 4:30 A.M. Austin is in bed with the flu. We have an assessor coming to look at the house in 3 1/2 hours for our re-fi. I still have a lot of cleaning to do. Please pray!
~ My Husband Rocks! ~ laughter & fun
Click here to read about why I started MHR Fridays!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

2. Tell the story of a memory about your husband that brings you a smile and a giggle every time you think about it!

I picked this topic thinking that it was going to be so easy to come up with the perfect memory to share, but my problem was that there are soooooooooooo many!!! Austin is the kind of guy that makes even the most mundane of situations fun and enjoyable, and he has always been able to make me laugh regardless of my initial mood.

First I was thinking of telling you all about the time that we were driving between college and Colorado, and Austin saw flashing lights behind us. Thinking he was going to be pulled over, he quickly took the nearest exit ramp only to watch an ambulance go screaming past! (teehee, that one makes me giggle every time)

Or, I could talk about the horseback riding tour we took on our honeymoon where Austin quickly befriended the other family in our group as well as our tour guide with his gregarious personality, then enjoyed immensely pretending that he was John Wayne and galloping off into the sunset.

Even when we were doing all the work on the house, we had a blast! I remember one Saturday in particular, it was a "haul-out" day after we had a TON of debris on the floors from the demolition process we would rent a huge roll-off dumpster and shovel the chunks of plaster and lath and drywall and trim and termite-eaten wood into the bucket of a skid-loader and then Austin would drive it around and dump it into the dumpster. This particular Saturday, it was just the two of us working at the house, and it was HOT! The house had no air conditioning at the time, and we were working on the second floor. There were several times during the day where we looked at the mess around us and thought that we would never finish, but when the sun was going down and we were sitting in the bucket of the skid loader, drinking our Vault, we were both so happy that we had gotten so much done! It was not a particularly fun job, but I remember that being such a satisfying day because we had accomplished something huge together!

But one of my absolute favorite memories took place when we were in Switzerland with a group from our college. We had just spent three weeks in France as a missions trip, and one of the girls in our group lived in Switzerland, right on Lake Geneva, so we spent a week at her home before going back to Paris for the trip home. One evening while we were there, her entire family came to her parents' house, where we were staying, including her older sister, and her little niece Klalia, who had to be about 6 months old at the time. Austin spent a good amount of time on the floor that evening playing with Klalia, and making her squeal with laughter. I had never seen him so enjoy a little one, and it was precious to watch. I was able to catch a picture of that moment, and I love it because he has the most genuinely happy smile on his face! :) I love that memory.

Property Ladder - Living Room, Entryway, Staircase & Upstairs Hallway Reveal!

Property Ladder

The final rooms on the main floor are the living room and the entry way. It may seem that I did this little tour backwards, starting at the back of the house and moving forward, but it is the most logical progression for us, as we always come in the back door, and spend most of our time in the family room. :)

This is what the living room looked like before/during the renovations:

And today:

Photobucket
The piano came with the house :)

Photobucket
Eventually, the pocket door that is leaning against the wall will be installed in its place - it was built into a wall, but all of the hardware and pulleys are still there and working!

The way that the house was laid out when we got it, you could not even access the main floor after you entered the front door. The house had been divided into apartments, and the area where we now have our entryway was jury-rigged into a bathroom! When you walked through the front door, you walked directly into a royal blue wall, and the only way you could go was up the stairs. I cannot for the life of me remember why we failed to take pictures of that monstrosity; however, I do have some "during" pics:

Photobucket
The wiring was a virtual spiders' nest, as each apartment had one, or more, panel and box!

On the landing, we keep one of my favorite decorations. This beautiful piece was a wedding present from my coworkers, and I set up the inside with one of our wedding invitations, my gloves, and Austin's boutennier. :)

Because the house had been so chopped up, we had to re-work a lot of the upstairs layout. In fact, this is what was sitting in the middle of what is now our hallway:

Generation Renovation - Dining Room & Library Reveal!

Generation Renovation

~ Dining Room ~
~ BEFORE ~

Photobucket

We decided to turn the previous owner's kitchen into our dining room (since we were moving the kitchen back to be closer to the family room). In this picture, we were in the midst of removing the cabinets:

Photobucket

~ DURING ~

Then we really opened up both rooms by tearing out the dividing wall:

Photobucket

Photobucket

~AFTER~

This is now what you see when standing in the dining room, looking where that wall and the furnace, used to be:

We kept the bay window, added hardwood (laminate) flooring where they had had carpet and voila:
Photobucket

~ Library ~
~ BEFORE ~

The above picture was taken while standing in the library. The library was the former owner's dining room:

Photobucket

Note the walls the color of aluminum foil:

Photobucket

~ DURING ~

Photobucket

~ After ~

This room is going to serve as mainly Austin's office/work space (I have my own office upstairs), and we have not finished configuring the furniture exactly how we are going to have it, but this is the stage we're at now:

Photobucket

This next picture was taken standing in the window bay looking towards the dining room. As you can see we kept the built-in shelving on both sides (I'm not sure why the walls look so blue in this one, they're really closer to the green in the other two pics):

Photobucket

And this picture was taken standing in the living room facing the large desk/shelving unit:

There you have it! We're getting close to wrapping up the main floor! Thanks for joining me on our extended tour!

Weekend Warriors - Laundry Room & Downstairs Bathroom Reveal!

Weekend Warriors

The bathroom/laundry room section of the main floor was one of those areas where we looked at what had been there previously, and then did it completely differently, lol! The previous owners had a full bath (sort of) which we shrunk to a half bath. So, we moved the wall over a little bit, and put the laundry room in what had been a tiny, tiny office/hallway - I know, it's hard to understand - I saw it and I still don't understand it!

I have kicked myself over and over for not taking good before pics of this area, so the best I can do is "during" shots:

Photobucket

Note the lovely jungle green walls complementing the foam-carving rock work - for the feeling of bathing out in the wild.

Photobucket

Rather than install a pre-made tub, they had constructed the shape of a tub out of plywood and covered it with a thick plastic material to serve as the tub. The thing was solid as a rock, but not exactly water-tight, so the floor underneath it was rotted away.

Photobucket

The wall on the right with the hole in it is the one we moved slightly to make room for the laundry room. My mother in law (who is partially visible through the hole) is standing it what is now the laundry room.

Photobucket

Our toilet now sits beneath the window that was above their bathtub/cave.

Photobucket

Since we opted for a half bath on the main floor, just the pedestal sink, no tub or shower :)

Photobucket

Smaller bathroom meant we could have laundry on the main floor which is such a HUGE blessing! I love it!

There you have it! Another small slice of our home! Hope you all have a fabulous Monday!
