~ My Husband Rocks! ~ Responsible!

Click here to read about why I started MHR Fridays!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My fabulous hubby, Austin, is a very responsible individual.
I've posted before about how great he is with money, how concerned he is for me and my welfare, what a great spiritual leader he is, how he takes care of me when I'm sick, and how seriously he takes his role as my protector, so I won't go on and on about all of that, lol!
However, just this past week, he has shown me - in a lot of varying areas - how much he earnestly desires to make good decisions and take care of me, and our family.
The first one came last Friday when we were riding the bike trail around our town.
Photobucket
No, that's not us,
I just thought it was a cool pic
Somehow we got separated, and somehow - miracle of miracles - I ended up getting ahead of him and beat him home. (That never happens!) To this day neither of us can figure out how that happened, but that's not even really the point. When he rode up the driveway, he looked rather cross (to say the least). After he pulled in, we proceeded to have a quite lenghty argument discussion about sticking together on the bike trail. Honestly, at the time, I didn't feel like he was rocking very much, but looking back on the situation I am able to see through the fabulous 20/20 hindsight goggles that he was just very worried about me - he ended up adding 2 miles to his ride just waiting and looking for me!
Another area where he takes his responsibilities very seriously is our house.
Photobucket
Thank the Lord,
we are f-a-a-a-a-a-r past THIS stage,
but, you get the idea
We are getting V-E-R-Y close to being finished, and all of the final touches, not to mention the time limits and pressure from the bank on the financial side of the coin, are causing Austin a HUGE amount of stress. I so appreciate that he cares enough - and is a responsible enough individual - to worry about these things. Although I pray that his worrying will not be detrimental and that he will ultimately trust in God to take care of those things which are out of our control; it speaks very highly of his character that he concerns himself with the whole project :) And he is truly very talented at every piece he has tackled thus far. He is also wise enough to know when something is beyond his ability and how to ask for help!
And last, but certainly not least:
He's taking me here:
Photobucket
Well, maybe not exactly here,
but isn't this a gorgeous view?
That's right, we're going to Colorado to be with my family and spend the week (the whole group of us) in the same condo where Austin and I spent our honeymoon! I am soooooo looking forward to this trip, spending time with my family and friends from home, and relaxing in the beautiful mountain scenery and sunshine!
~ My Husband Rocks! ~ the garage sale . . .
Click here to read about why I started MHR Fridays!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Last weekend (and this weekend, too . . . but that's another story), we held our very first garage sale. Not the first we've ever seen or been to, but the first garage sale we have . . . hosted (?) . . . is that the correct garage sale vocabulary? Lol!

I'm not sure why, but I tend to let myself get VERY stressed out about things like that - and last Friday morning I was mega-stressed. I had orchestrated several things that didn't come together "in time" (in my opinion) and I was hugely frustrated.

Austin took the time while we were getting ready for work to hug me and help me figure out how to rearrange my schedule to let everything come together well. I was able to leave work early, and when he got home at the normal time he came out to my little cashier table and made sure I had a snack and some water to drink - it was WAY hot!

And then, on Saturday he sat outside with me all day long :) What a great hubby I have!

This is a pic from our
4th of July weekend in Davenport :)

~ My Husband Rocks! ~ but sometimes . . .

Click here to read about why I started MHR Fridays!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
. . . I don't think he believes it.
Poor Austin. He's been under a little stress lately. And by a little, I mean stress such as would cripple an ordinary man.
Praise the Lord that mine is no ordinary man :)
He is so very sweet because I think he tries to keep me from worrying about it, but I know that he has been very discouraged lately. There are a lot of details that I'm not going to go into here, but between work and trying to get everything finished on and around the house before the end of this month, he has a lot on his plate. He is my superman! Please pray that I would be a true help meet to him in these circumstances and that we would both look to the Lord for our true strength as we try to do the seemingly-impossible!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Don't forget . . . next week is going to be one big party! Hope you'll all be able to join us as we celebrate the 1st birthday of My Husband Rocks!!!

~ My Husband Rocks! ~ Sharing Life

Click here to read about why I started MHR Fridays!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Good morning, and welcome to another week of ~ My Husband Rocks! ~ Fridays!!! I hope that you all enjoyed a most wonderful Christmas! I know that we have so far! We had a somewhat harrowing (at the beginning) yet thankfully uneventful drive out to Colorado to spend the holidays with my family. Thanks to my amazing hubby and the fact that we had another friend riding with us, I did not have to drive at all (which I greatly appreciated)!
I am so thankful for my fantastick husband this week! (I'm thankful for him all the time, but there's just something about Christmas that makes everything all warm and fuzzy, you know?) I am so appreciative that he brought me to Colorado to see my family for Christmas! This has been one of the greatest gifts for me! I have also been reminded very intensely of the blessing we have in the form of his financial savvy! Because of his skill in this area, and great blessing from the Lord, we are able to have and do and experience so many things that I never would have imagined possible! I also love how he is able to make people laugh in almost any situation! He is also so hand that he was able to fix my parent's vacuum, and my niece's (well my cousin's daughter's) Elmo doll :)
One moment of this past week really sticks out in my mind as a reason why my husband rocks! After the Christmas Eve service at my parents' church they had my grandparents and their new neighbors over for supper. Their neighbors moved to Colorado from Texas, and the wife is originally from Germany. They have led fascinating lives, and we had a great time talking to them. At one point they both stated that they sincerely enjoyed traveling alone - and had done so many times before they were married. Austin said that he would rather have someone to share it with, to which they responded that you take in so much more of the sights and culture when you are there alone. Austin's response just melted my heart: "I would rather miss some of that, and have someone to share it with." Later on we were talking about this, and he told me, "Life is meant to be shared!" I am so very grateful that he chose to share his life with me, and that I get to share mine with him! Thank you so much, hunnybear! I love you!!!
Giving Back this Christmas!
If you've been around the great adventure for a little while, then I'm sure you remember this post about my friends Steve and Melinda Hoyt and their adorable little girls who are serving God in Uganda.
I received the following e-mail from them a couple of weeks ago:
Holiday Greetings to all!
Our family will be preparing Christmas bundles to give out to the many needy families in our neighborhood and we specifically will be targeting non-Christians so that we to can share with them the true beauty of the Light born into the World come to set us free. We want to give a practical gift of love with the message of hope. Our girls will be making art work and putting evangelical scripture verses with each bundle to leave a lasting bit of the Word for reflection.
Gift Bundles of $10 will include
Sauce pan
Maize Meal
Salt
Soap
Slippers
Candles
Matches
Tea
Sugar
If we have an additional $8.50 we can include a Bible in each bundle as well.
Love,
Melinda Hoyt
As soon as I read this, I responded to their e-mail asking for some more information so I could post it here.
I know that this year especially money is tight for so many of us, but I also know that the blessing of living in the United States automatically makes us wealthy by the standards of most of the rest of the world.
If you would like to contribute to this worthy cause, there are a couple of different ways to make a donation:
1) The quickest way to donate is through their PayPal account: Melinda(at)emiea(dot)org The only drawback to this method is that the donation will not be tax deductible.
2) If you would like to receive a receipt for tax deduction purposes, a check can be mailed directly to:
Engineering Ministries International
Att Financial Dept
130 E. Kiowa
Suite 200
Colorado Springs, CO 80903
If sent via snail mail please add a separate note with "add to the Hoyt account" written on it. Do not write their name anywhere on the check. Only write "Engineering Ministries International" in the "To" field.
3)If you would prefer to donate via Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT), I would gladly e-mail the form to you.
If you are unable to donate financially at this time, I know that they would covet your prayers as they minister in this practical way to their non-believing neighbors.
Thanks for reading!
~ My Husband Rocks! ~ Top Ten List
Click here to read about why I started MHR Fridays!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Good morning everyone!!! Before we get to my top ten list of reasons why my fabulous husband is so very fabulous, we have some business to discuss. Don't worry. It's good business! :)

1. Last week, the idea was brought up that we should do themes or prompts for MHR every week so that those of us who are needing some direction or inspiration can have a good starting place. I for one think that this is a FABULOUS idea, so starting next Thursday (Thanksgiving day :) ) I will post be posting a link to a blog post or an article about marriage, or something marriage related, and your prompt for the following Friday. MHR has never had very stringent rules, and this is not about to become one of them. If the prompt or theme does not do anything for you - write about whatever you want! This is still just a tool for you to edify and encourage your husband, and you know him better than any of us do.

This brings me to my first request: Please comment here or e-mail me with any theme/prompt ideas that you may have. I have a few ideas - well at least the beginnings of what may possibly be ideas, but I know that you are all wonderfully creative, and I cannot wait to hear what you have up your sleeves. Please, help me! I can use all the help I can get!

2. Do not forget that we have another fabulous giveaway (courtesy of the lovely Tara waiting in the wings until we have reached 150 participants!!! As of last week we had reached 128, so we only have to have a mere 22 more before we do another giveaway!

Reqeust number two: Encourage your friends and readers to join us in building up our husbands on a weekly basis!!!

Third request: If your name does not appear on the MHR Participants blogroll, but you are participating, first of all I am terribly sorry to have missed you, but secondly please, please, please, PLEASE leave a comment, or shoot me an e-mail so I can add you!!!

I think that is all the business I have for you today. Oh, one more thing - my 100th post is coming up very shortly, so there may be a party, I don't know - at least a really cool post :)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Okay, now for the good stuff :) (I mean, I think all of it was pretty good, but come on now, I'm about to brag about the most wonderful man in the world, it does not get much better than that!)
Top Ten Reasons why Austin ROCKS!!!
Photobucket
1. He loves the Lord! And he lets everyone know it!
2. He takes such good care of our family!
3. He loves people, and would give you the shirt off his back, a hot meal and a place to stay after he had worked all day helping you paint your house, or put in a bathtub, or whatever other project you needed help with.
4. He is such a hard worker.
5. He is a wonderful provider, and loves to give me the things I just want, even after he has taken care of the things we need!
Photobucket
6. He is thankful for everything we have, and does not presume to act like he is the one who deserves the credit for it. He is always quick to give the glory to God.
7. He is very wise, and not likely to react rashly and emotionally.
I told you he was great!
~ My Husband Rocks! ~ quite the list!
Click here to read about why I started MHR Fridays!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

In case you missed the memo, my husband rocks! Like the entire party, no joke :) lol! In fact, he rocks so much that I have a list of things just from THIS WEEK that make him amazing!

1.) As I have mentioned before, he absolutely loves his job. One of the things he loves about his job is that he works for an incredibly strong Christian man, so he gets to be very open and vocal abot his faith without being afraid of any reprucussions that would be negative to his career (not that that is really a concern to him, as we saw in last week's post). Austin is not one to shove anything down someone's throat, he is just very real about what he believes and what he is struggling with, and how his faith affects his life and those around him. One very exciting result of this is that one of his co-workers asked this week if he and his famil could go to church with us this weekend! :)

2.) On Tuesday morning, we awoke to find that my car had a VERY flat tire. We realized this too late to do anything before work, but after work, Austin went straight to work removing the tire and hurrying to take it into the tire place before they closed. This rocks in and of itself, but my hubby took it one step further. He was intelligent enough to know that the way the tire went flat seemed unusual, and pointed that out to the tire people. Sure enough, the tire split from a manufacturer's defect, so we went home with a brand new tire without paying a dime for it!

Photobucket ~ Photobucket ~ Photobucket

3.) Austin is very patriotic. He made sure that we knew where our voter registration cards were and where our polling place was, and that we got there on time to be able to do our civic duty and vote. Not only that, but even though I know he was disappointed as well, he whipped his attitude into shape long before I did, and I know that he will continue to lift our nation and its leaders up in prayer just as he did before.

4.) He is an awesome puppy daddy. Sure, he may talk like he was a little uneasy about having her move into the house with us, but I think he enjoys having here more than I do. He is always playing with her, or letting her rest her head in his lap (absolutely adorable, and it melts my heart every time), or laying on the floor with her. Last night it was really chilly in here, so he had covered up with a big afghan. When he got the blanket, Diddy already had her head in his lap, so he just covered her up with him, and she stayed that way for quite awhile!

Things to do on a Friday night in a small town . . .

. . . go to the emergency room!!!

Photobucket

Yep, that's right. Life is certainly never boring, I'll tell you that much. You see, it all started at the fair. Austin and I rode up to Des Moines on a Harley owned by our friend Craig, and camped with Craig's family in their motor home. Well, when the time came that evening to move the bikes from general parking over to the campground, I had changed from my jeans to shorts, but didn't think much of it as we were just going to move the bike, not ride it for an extended period of time. So we hop on and cruise up to the campgrounds, where the parking is very, very tight. Thinking that I'll just get off real quick so that Austin can maneuver the bike more easily, I slide of the right side (big no-no) and land my exposed calf right on the VERY hot exhaust pipe! It didn't take me too long to move from that position, but as I was trying to get away from the pipe, I turned and scraped the back of my thigh on Craig's bike's license plate holder!

The burn hurt like the dickens, but didn't seem too bad, so we just walked down towards the fairgrounds and got some ointment from the police officers on duty, which cooled it and formed a kind of second skin which protected it nicely. This is what it looked like that Sunday morning:
Photobucket

It blistered and popped, and I thought that I was doing a fantastic job of keeping it clean. I put triple antibiotic ointment on it regularly and cleaned it out at least once a day with hydrogen peroxide, but by the end of the week, it was obviously infected and it hurt to even stand on my right leg for any period of time. By Friday night the redness of the infection had grown to an area of 8x11 centimeters at its widest and tallest points, and our friend Michael, with whom we were hanging out and playing games expressed his concern that it may be a Staph infection, and strongly suggested that we visit the emergency room immediately. This is what it looked like on Friday night:
Photobucket
(The flash washed it out a little bit, but I've drawn a line around where the redness was.)
Photobucket
(This one shows it a little bit better, but my calf just looked so defined in the first one, lol!)

Tyler and Emma went with us to the emergency room, and we were processed very quickly. The doctor said that even though it was not a Staph infection, it was very good that we had come right away because it was very infected. She prescribed an antibiotic and wrote on me with a surgery pen, instructing us to return if the infection spread rapidly in any direction, or if it was no better by Sunday night.
Photobucket
Tyler and Austin waiting for our names to be called (we were the only ones there)!

Thankfully, the antibiotics are doing their job and the infection has decreased significantly. It's still a little tender, but that's to be expected. We were a little shocked at the price tag on six pills: $134!!! Thank the Lord for good health, because I cannot imagine spending that kind of money on prescriptions on a too regular basis!

I've been feeling kind of funky all week, and I wasn't really sure why, so I did some research. The antibiotic, called Levaquin, is reported to have the following side effects: Headache, difficulty sleeping, agitation, anxiety, back and joint pain, changeable emotions, depression, difficulty concentrating, disorientation.(source) Which is a pretty good summary of the way I've been feeling. Thankfully this is the last day I will be taking it, so I'm really looking forward to the weekend.

Sorry I've been MIA this week. When I would get home from work, I would just crash - terrible headaches and the trouble sleeping at night has made me very emotional and weepy. Next week will be much better!

Thanks for reading, and for sticking with me through the slow weeks!

Austin'$ Money Minute$ . . . ?

As you all well know by now, I think my hubby is pretty awesome. I am daily impressed by his abilities and his wisdom.

As I said here, he is wonderful with money, and I think that a lot of people would benefit from him sharing his expertise in this area. To that end, I pitched him the idea of writing a post, once or twice a month, answering questions or giving tips about how we can all be smarter with our money.

His initial reaction was that he did not really want to do this. His financial savvy is such a natural part of his thought processes that he said he just expects it to be "common knowledge," and he would hate people to feel like he was talking down to them or insulting their intelligence in any way. He also does not want to come across as being egotistical about this God-given knack. He is always the first to give God the glory for all of His wonderful blessings.

However, I pointed out to him that while these things seem obvious to him, before we started dating I looked at money in a completely different way, and I think that a lot of people out there don't realize that there are a lot of areas where they could be saving money and spending more wisely.

We decided to let you decide :) I've added a poll to the right sidebar, and we really want your absolutely honest opinions!!! Austin has said that if the majority of you vote yes, he will "guest blog" :) So, if you vote yes, and have specific questions, please be sure to leave them in the comments or e-mail them to us at hossandkatylin(at)gmail(dot)com.

You won't hurt our feelings if you vote no, but if there truly is a desire for this kind of information, I'd feel uber-selfish keeping it locked up in his beautiful head!

:)

~my husband rocks!~ money

Photobucket

Happy Friday everybody! I hope you have all had a fabulous week! Thanks for joining us again for another installment of ~My Husband Rocks!~ Friday!

This week I'd like to tell you about the financial wizard that is my husband! I have always known that he was very frugal, and he comes by it honestly as he is VERY Dutch! This is not uncommon in our part of the world. In fact the joke is, "Do you know where copper wire came from? Two Dutch men fighting over a penny!" And if you are Dutch or know Dutch people or, like me, married into a Dutch family, you will understand that this is (often) the case! :)

Not only is he very careful with our money, he also takes his responsibility as financial manager of our family very seriously. At any given point he could tell you the interest rate and balance of any loan, credit card, or bank account we have. He monitors them all very closely, and ensures that every payment gets made on time without fail.

Photobucket

Because he is so conscious of our finances, we are able to do and have many things that we would not be able to afford otherwise. Everything from our wonderful home to our plethora of fun "big kid" toys, to the myriad of entertainment options that we enjoy - none of it would be possible if was not so intelligent and contientious with our money.

In fact, he often says that he would like to be a financial advisor to other families who may be struggling in this area, and he would be great at this because he can so easily identify the places where people are spending more money than they need to, whether they're not using financial tools well, or if they just eat too much fast food, he has great discernment in this area. He has great discernement in a lot of areas, but that's another post for another Friday.

I am so blessed and so thankful to be married to such a smart, responsible, wonderful man!

~EDITED: I was re-reading this and realized that I must give credit to God. He has blessed us and continues to bless us beyond my wildest imagination, and Hoss would be the first to say that the main reason we live so comfortably is because of God's provision and blessing.~

Thanks for reading everybody! Be sure to check in with all the ladies in the list to the right to hear about more husbands who rock!
