PPW: His Work

Book Study
The Power of A Praying Wife: His Work
Pages 49-54

Photobucket

Happy Monday, everyone!

This week we're looking at Chapter 2 of The Power of a Praying Wife by Stormie Omartian.

Our husbands' workis such a huge part of who they are. As Omartian puts it: "God recognizes that a man's work is a source of fulfillment to him. He says there is nothing better than for a man to 'enjoy the good of all his labor - it is the gift of God' (Ecclesiastes 3:13).

I love praying through the prayers that she has written. They are always so thorough and eloquent. My pattern is to usually pray through the prayer in the chapter we're currently studying, go back through the prayers from previous chapters, then pray about specific things that Austin and I are going through.

More great "power tools" in this chapter, and I'm going to focus on Psalm 90:17 "Let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us, and extablish the work of our hands for us; yes, establis the work of our hands."

If you're reading and praying and memorizing along with us, and you'd like to share your thoughts on chapter two, paste your link here:

PPW: His Wife

Book Study
The Power of A Praying Wife: His Wife
Pages 25-47

Good morning, all!

Today we tackle chapter 1 of The Power of a Praying Wife by Stormie Omartian.

Each chapter of this book focusues on a unique aspect of your husband's life and appropriately enough, Omartian starts in chapter one with His Wife.

The first time I read this book, it struck me as odd that I should begin praying for my husband by praying for myself. But as Omartian so eloquently put it:

"My heart had to be softened, humbled, pummeled, molded and reconstructed before He even started working on my husband. I had to learn to see things according to the way GOd saw them - not how I thought they should be."

She goes on throughout the chapter to describe the way she used to pray for her husband, stating that her favorite three-word prayer was "Change him, Lord." I have to admit, that I have probably prayed that same prayer more times than enough times to be aboslutely humbled by the rest of her explanations that if I expect to see any positive change in my marriage, it's crucial to begin with my own heart and motivations and reactions to my husband and let God take care of it.

She speaks with so much wisdom throughout this whole chapter, and she gives such sound biblical advice on how to be a good wife.

"When you are praying for yourself - his wife - remember this model of a good wife from the Bible. It says she takes care of her home and runs it well. She knows how to buy and sell and make wise investments. She keeps herself healthy and strong and dresses attractively. She works diligently and has skills which are marketable. Sh is giving and conscientiously prepares for the future. She contributes to her husband's good reputation. She is strong, solid, honorable, and not afraid of growing older. She speaks wisely and kindly. She doesn't sit around doing nothing, but carefully watches what goes on in her home. Her children and her husband praise her. She doesn't rely on charm and beauty but knows that the fear of the Lord is what is most attractive. She supports her husband and still has a fruitful life of her own which speaks loudly for itself (Proverbs 31)."

As always she provides a pre-written prayer to guide us in praying for the traits she has described throughout the chapter, as well as several scriptures she calls "Power Tools."

For this week, I'm going to work on memorizing Mark 11:24, 25 "Whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them. And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses."

If you're reading and praying and memorizing along with us, and you'd like to share your thoughts on chapter one, past your link here:

PPW: The Power

RE-POST! Okay, we are going to try this again! I started this series, and then everything exploded with BBI - while we're still really busy, I think that this is an important series to finish, so that's what I'm gonna do! I thought I'd re-post the introduction post to get us moving again! :)

Book Study
The Power of A Praying Wife: The Power
pages 13-23

Good morning everyone!

I am so excited to start our book study of The Power of a Praying Wife by Stormie Omartian.

This book is set up so that every chapter deals with a different aspect of your husband's life, with a specific prayer at the end of each chapter dealing with that particular characteristic.

This week, we're going to be looking at what is essentially the introduction to the book, a chapter Omartian has entitled The Power.

The Power emphasizes the absolute essential nature of praying for our husbands. On page 18, Omartian describes marriage in this way: "They are a team, one unit, unified in spirit. The strength of a man and wife joined together in God's sight is far greater than the sum of the strengths of each of the two individuals." She goes on to say that "the enemy" despises "this oneness" and "devises ways to weaken it." Which is why it is so crucial to cover our spouses and our marriage in prayer.

The final portion of this chapter covers an area that I have honestly wondered about, and I'm so glad that she highlights. The heading at the top of page 21 says, "What About Me? I Need Prayer, Too." Omartian lets us know that "it's natural to enter into this prayer venture wondering if your husband will ever be praying for you in the same way you're praying for him. . . .Regardless, whether he does or doesn't is not your concern, it's Gods. So release him from that obligation."

That is so tough for me, but it is so necessary for both my sanity and the sincerity of my prayers for him.

What it comes down to is we're all in different places in our marriages and in our walks with God. But no matter where we find ourselves, God longs to commune with us, and he longs to give us fullness of joy in every aspect of our lives. That does not mean that it will be easy, I don't think that anything worthwhile ever is. But it does mean that we do not have to do any of this under our own power. The Power to persevere comes from the One who is greater, and stronger, and more wonderful than we could ever ask or imagine. Praise the Lord!

"Keep in mind that you are both imperfect people. Only the Lord is perfect. Look to God as the source of all you want to see happen in your marriage, and don't worry about how it will happen. It's your responsibility to pray. It's God's job to answer. Leave it in His hands."

Praying for my hubby, and for you all!

Praying for Our Husbands Book Study

Photobucket

Well, we've come to the end of our 31 Days of Praying for Our Husbands! If you missed it, or just want to go through it again, the original "Praying for Our Husbands" post has links to each day of the 31-day series. Click here or on the button below to read that post.

Also in that post I announced that following 31 Days of Praying for Our Husbands, we would be starting a blog "book study" of The Power of a Praying Wife by Stormie Omartian, one chapter per week. That series will be starting up on Monday, August 31, so anyone who hadn't heard about it before now still has time to get a copy of the book.

I have never done a "book study" on the blog before, so I'll kind of be making it up as I go along. If you have any questions or suggestions now, or throughout the run of the series, please feel free to comment, or e-mail me at katylinvw{at}yahoo{dot}com :)

I'm excited, hope you'll decide to read and pray along with me!

Motivate Me Monday ~ Thoughts on Prayer

Composing Hallelujahs

Since we are in the midst of a series on Praying for our Husbands, and because it is a topic that has been very prevalent in my mind recently, the following thoughts really jumped out at me when I was flipping through a small devotional book at Bryce & Thelma's house this weekend:

Photobucket

Even though it is often difficult for us to pray when we find ourselves in the middle of great trials, that is exactly the time when we most need to pray. Every time we pray, whether it feels like it or not, we are brought into the very throne room of heaven. Jesus himself ushers our prayers into the presence of the Father, and that alone assures us that they will be heard and answered. Prayer is a matter of obedience, but it is also a matter of survival. Prayer is the lifeline of the soul, and we cannot afford to do without it.
So let us pray to the God who hears and answers. Jesus has promised he will see to it that our requests get God's personal attention.

~ Jan Draveky

God invites us to take all our concerns to him. He never qualifies those concerns as big ones or little ones. His Word says every concern of ours is a concern of his.
I have assumed his attitude toward us is one of immense care. But that doesn't mean I should toss daily trivia to him, does it? The trouble with my thinking is I don't know at what point of my "carings" to bring God into the picture. What constitutes the cutoff point between big and small?
The notion of bringing God into everything has nothing to do with trivializing him; it has to do with the privilege of partnering with him. When I include God on my wild washing-machine rides and as I mentally travel in circles with my computer and its attitude. I'm cheered by his companionship and the knowledge that I'm in partnership with him.

~ My Husband Rocks! ~ teammates!

Click here to read about why I started MHR Fridays!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This week, we have the awesome challenge from Mike over at OPEN Mike in his post Tour de Vie to
If you had to name your Team, the one group with which you most identify, would it be family, friends, schoolmates, work associates, church members, ministry partners? When was the last time you served them as a domestique?
If you can’t recall, do something tactical and supporting for a teammate by the time the Tour de France concludes on Sunday.
First off, let's get some definitions:
tactical
--adjective
1. of or pertaining to tactics, esp. military or naval tactics.
2. characterized by skillful tactics or adroit maneuvering or procedure: tactical movements.
3. of or pertaining to a maneuver or plan of action designed as an expedient toward gaining a desired end or temporary advantage.
4. expedient; calculated.
5. prudent; politic.
support
--verb
1. to bear or hold up (a load, mass, structure, part, etc.); serve as a foundation for.
2. to sustain or withstand (weight, pressure, strain, etc.) without giving way; serve as a prop for.
3. to undergo or endure, esp. with patience or submission; tolerate.
4. to sustain (a person, the mind, spirits, courage, etc.) under trial or affliction
5. to maintain (a person, family, establishment, institution, etc.) by supplying with things necessary to existence; provide for.
6. to uphold (a person, cause, policy, etc.) by aid, countenance, one's vote, etc.; back; second.
7. to maintain or advocate (a theory, principle, etc.)
8. to corroborate (a statement, opinion, etc)
9. to act with or second (a lead performer); assist in performance.
I think it is so vital to remember, but so very easy to forget, that our husbands are our closest and most important teammates! I have often noticed in many relationships, but most vividly in my own marriage, how easy it is to take their partnership for granted - and to treat them far worse than we would ever dream of treating even complete strangers! I don't know if it is because we are so comfortable with them - as well we should be, but we should never allow that sense of comfort to morph into disregard and disrespect.
This is something that both Austin and I are trying to be far more aware of in ourselves and guard ourselves against. (Admittedly, he does a far better job of keeping himself in check than I do) It is so very easy to fall into this pattern of behavior, but it is also soooooooo worth it to avoid it!!! :)
~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~

Father, please help us to support the mates that you have given to us and to treasure and value them to such a great extent that to treat them with disrespect, unkindness, or contempt would be inconceivable! Thank you so much for the wonderful men that you have provided for our journeys! :)

Praying for Our Husbands

Photobucket

Every week, in ~ My Husband Rocks! ~ Fridays, we proclaim to the world what we love about the wonderful men in our lives! This is something that has profoundly affected my marriage and my attitude toward my husband.

Another practice that I know has the potential to impact us, our husbands, our marriages, our children, and everyone around us for ETERNITY is praying. In this case, specifically for our husbands. One way I am going to purpose to do that - and encourage all of you to do the same - is by doing 2 series on ways we can pray for our husbands.

The first is going to be 31 Days of Praying for Our Husbands, and for the second I'll be going through the book The Power of a Praying Wife by Stormie Omartian one chapter per week. My thinking on this is anyone who wants to do the second series with me will have time to get a copy of the book during the first.

I ran accross the 31 Days of Praying for Our Husbands at A Happy Heart At Home. If I understand correctly, she found it here, and that was based upon the encouragement on the Revive Our Hearts website.

I am so excited about these series, and I hope you all are as well! If you have any questions or suggestions I'd be happy to field them! :) Our 31 days will start on Monday, July 20!

See you then!

Motivate Me Monday!

As I mentioned in this post, I have joined the ranks of the 5AM Gals!

Sarah Mae, the illustrious founder of our little group has decided to be even more illustrious (illustriouser, I don't think that's a word) and add a meme to the fabulousness :) Motiveate Me Mondays!

The 5AM Gals (or the 5:16AM Gals as we are now know, see Sarah Mae's post here) e-mail each other on a very regular basis to encourage each other and share what we have been learning and remind each other that we are praying for each other (and that we're not alone in the bleary-eyed caffeine addict club, either, lol - j/k, it really has not been that bad!) However, Sarah Mae wanted to let you all in on the motivation as well :) - You do not have to be a memeber of the 5AM Club to participate, but let me tell you what, it is well worth the investment!

This is an escerpt from my prayer journal from last week:

This morning, I was closer to 6 by the time I crawled out of bed, but I still had a faulous time in the Word. I was reading in the book of Acts, finishing the third chapter and also chapter 4, and I am madly in love with this verse:

Acts 4:13

"When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus."

I had underlined it previously, and it struck me anew this morning. It is speaking of the Sanhedrin's reaction to Peter and John healing the crippled beggar (you remember the "walking, and leaping, and praising God" song from Sunday school). The Sanhedrin - who were actually working against the gospel message - could tell that these "ordinary men" had been with Jesus, just by the way that they spoke and acted!

I want this so badly for my life! I want the people with whom I come into contact - ESPECIALLY those who are not familiar with or opposed to the gospel message - to have no other explanation for my words an actions than that I have been with Jesus!

I am so thankful for the accountability the 5AM club has offered me, and at the risk of repeating myself, I have forever struggled with setting a specific, consistent time to spend reading the Bible and in prayer, and I think that this is exaclty what I've needed!

Thank you all for praying for me!

5AM Club! & NaNoWriMo Blues

Photobucket
(source)

5AM is a darkly hour;
My body says, "It's night."
But rise I shall,
'Cause I'm a 5AM Gal
And the Lord gives me the might.

Photobucket

The above poem was written by Lisa over at Stop and Smell the Chocolates in reference to the 5AM Club started by Sarah Mae at Like a Warm Cup of Coffee. Lisa is a member, and so am I. The purpose of our little group is to intentionally set a time every day, first thing in the morning, to spend some quality time with the Lord. And let me tell you what - whoooey! 5:00 comes pretty early, in case you were confused. But these ladies have all committed to it (the exact time is different for everybody, but . . .) and we have also committed to praying for each other to be able to keep this committment. (Not a great sentence, but I think it makes sense.) I have always struggled with maintaining a consistent time for my quiet times, but I am loving the 5AM Club, even though it is early, and even though it is cold outside of our warm covers, I believe that this accountability is exactly what I needed!

Photobucket
(source)

On another note, I am behind on my NaNoWriMo. By exactly 13,814 words. Thirteen. Thousand. Words. People!!! This is craziness! Now, I am not throwing in the towel, because that is what I always do. I am not good at sticking with anything that is, well, not easy, so I have decided that I will finish these 50,000 words if it kills me - and it just might. I think I have hit what some seasoned Wrimos have called "the wall" - only it's lasted for about 5 days, so I really need to get back on track!

That's where I'm at on this beautiful Wednesday.

And for your further bloggy enjoyment:

When You Call Yourself Names Wow. Can you say goosebumps, and weeping? - great post!
All Is Well That Ends Well the whole post is great, but I especially like the poem at the end!
Dear Mr. Obama she says everything that I would like to say to our President Elect, only better.

Have a great Wednesday!

President-Elect

Photobucket

It probably comes as no surprise that I was less than pleased with the results of Tuesday's presidential election. I was honestly hugely disappointed; however, in my blog reading this morning, I happened upon this post by Beth Moore, and found myself very convicted by what she had written.

I admit, I had a pretty bad attitude going to bed on Tuesday night, and Austin really humbled me by asking "So, you're saying God did not see this coming?"

Ouch.

Today, I have decided three things:

1) Complaining, griping, grousing, and pouting about the outcome of Tuesday's election will not change anything. It will only frustrate me and everyone around me.

2) Refusing to respect the man who was elected by the majority of American citizens is not only unfair (as I would expect others to respect McCain had he been elcted) it is downright sinful.

3) My God is still on the only true throne, and places people in position of authority according to His will. And, I hate to spoil the surprise, but I've read the end, and we win! :)

So, I will continue to pray for our nation, and our new president. It cannot possibly be an easy job, and he has a lot of difficult decisions to make in the weeks and months ahead.

Hope everyone has a fantastic Thursday!
