Ms. Mama Kat's Writer Workshop assignment for today:
4.) Write about a memory related to a holiday.
I spent hours that year watching my favorite movie of all time (all time was only nine years, but they were good years, and I had seen a lot of movies). I sang along with every song and I memorized every word of dialogue. All of my make-believe time was spent in Agrabah and every stuffed cat was named Raja.
When the time came to decide upon our Halloween costumes, it was a no-brainer! My mom and dad and sisters and I bundled into our mini-van and drove to the fabric store. We found the perfect flowing fabric for the sleeves and pant legs, and some wonderful stretchy jersey material for the bodice, cuffs and waistband. I helped cut the pattern pieces, and watched with rapt attnetion while Mom pinned and sewed them together, until I had to go to bed. Then came a stop at the toy store for the perfect Arabian accessories. A lovely scepter and jeweled headband completed the most beautiful costume I had ever imagined.
Halloween dawned bright and cold - freezing cold! If I remember correctly, it had even snowed that week. I put on long underwear beneath, but staunchly refused to cover my royal raiment with a coat - heaven forbid! I don't remember how the candy count compared with previous years, or if I couldn't feel my knees. I didn't care . . . I was a princess!
LOL! I LOVED that movie too, but it seems I was a bit older when I came out. I High School maybe? Don't know. But it was one of my faves! And oh no, who would every cover up Jasmine?!?!
ReplyDeletelovely story!
ReplyDeleteThat is so great that you guys made your costumes...yours is so cute!!
ReplyDeletelol! I was the same way. No matter how cold it was, the integrity of the costume was never compromised!!
ReplyDeleteAwww so CUTE! ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by!
See, that is why I follow the tradition of making costumes for my kids. They love it. plus they use them for dressups until they look like they belong to little orphan Annie, so we get a lot of life out of those costumes.
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting and for the compliment.
My girls (18 and 21 now) LOVED that movie! Everyone deserves to be a princess sometime!

ReplyDeleteLOL! That's so funny! My Jazmyn thinks it's the coolest thing in the world that there is a "Princess Jasmine" I bet she'd steal your costume if she could.haha
ReplyDeleteThis is so cool! I think I'm going to jump on board with this writing workshop thing!
ReplyDeleteOh how fun! I always wish that my mom was a sewer (sewer? Is that right?) and that I had learned from her. obviously since I don't even know what it's properly called -- ooo, seamstress! -- I have no skills. Great costume!
ReplyDeleteIt never fails...if it's hot outside your costume is like a steam bath and if it's cold you have to cover your costume with layers...it was still a nice memory despite that part :)
ReplyDeleteI loved that movie growing up. I remember going to sleep at night watching it play on my VCR. Waking up throughout the night and catching bits and pieces as it played over and over again.
ReplyDeleteI even wanted a pet tiger. My parents sadly said 'no'.
